Episode 11: supplements that work

“In many cases, it is worth paying more attention to nutrition and rest, because improving them will deliver far greater benefits than using supplements.”

When it comes to taking our sporting performance to the next level, supplements should not be our first choice.

Once our nutrition is under control and tailored to our needs and goals, and our sleep is sufficient and restorative, we can consider using sports supplements.

But be careful! Not all of them will have a positive effect on our sporting performance… or even our health.

That is why today’s episode features not one, not two, but three sports nutritionists. An extra dose of knowledge for a well-rounded episode covering everything you have always wanted to know about sports supplementation.

In this episode, Carlos Soler and Rubén Ballesteros, athletes and sports nutritionists, join Javi Guerrero, INDYA’s technical director, and Clara Montesinos, presenter and journalist. What a team!

We discuss the ABC(D) of supplements, whether they benefit athletes, which to use and which to avoid. Are all supplements the same? What is a medical supplement? And a sports food?

Your questions, answered.

  • Do athletes need supplements?
  • What types of supplements are there? How are they classified?
  • Are supplements safe? What scientific evidence supports them?
  • What is the A B C D classification? How does this system work?
  • Is a medical supplement the same as a sports performance supplement? How do they differ, and when should you choose each one?
  • What are sports foods?
  • Do endurance athletes and strength athletes use the same supplements?
  • Which supplement brands are getting things right?
  • Can underage athletes use sports supplements?
